A 19-year-old used a VPN and still got traced back to his own Windows machine. The VPN worked fine — Windows just handed Microsoft a permanent number for that install.
It’s called GDID, the Global Device ID. It shows up in an FBI case filing as g:6755467234350028. There’s a free tool called deGDID that shows you yours and strips it, but it’ll break Xbox, OneDrive and Microsoft sign-in.
